Sir! We realize that there could be several dimensions to communication and are keen to know more on that. But to day we came across a strange announcement. The head of a corporate hospital said that they are giving free treatment to some patients. We have never come across any such case in reality. Can that be true?
Vishnu Sarma smiled and replied..
For this we should know first what is meant by ‘free’? You have come across ‘buy one – get one free ads’ and got carried away by them probably!
Let us take an example. Taniya! You are good at fabric painting. Natalia wanted you to paint a birth day frock for her. As a friend, you decide to do it free of cost and promise her accordingly . So what do you do ? Buy her a birth day frock and paint it? See now you are already about to protest!! So think along the same lines. You expect her to give you her birth day frock and may be the paints too! Or at best as a gift to your friend you may buy the paints and do it. So what you mean here by the word ‘free’ is that your services or the charges for your hours are free and not the material or charges for other bought out items.
The same applies to the hospitals too. They may charge only for medicines or an x ray film or such bought out items and give their services for consultation or an operation free of charge to few poor patients. Then also it qualifies to be called as a ‘free’ treatment.
Now that we are on this subject of ‘free-ship’ let me give you a few thoughts on it.
To day we have many announcements and claims on ‘freebies’ from governments and corporations to individual level.
In this world very few things come really free nor is it good to expect totally free service.
Even parental love and affection ,to some extent at-least, is behind an implicit expectation or desire for a return of the gratitude during their old age. In our science , we call those living on others as ‘parasites’. You should never try to be like that , but instead stand on your own legs.
It was getting dark and the students got up to go to their homes pondering over the moral.
