                                                       PANCHATANTRA – TO DAY
By A.Venugopal
The stories of Panchatantra are world famous. Thanks to
comics, magazines & other publications even the modern
Generation children are getting conversant with them.
Their value is ever lasting and is useful to all. They explain
the complex art of state craft in simple stories , easy to understand
and assimilate even by the un-initiated lay men .
Here is an attempt to try to do the same for young children
to understand the concepts of Management .
I. Knowledge & Practice
It is the evening time and all the children had assembled around Vishnusharma.
They asked “Sir, now a days, when we talk about any new development,
we hear  “Oh! This was already found in our Vedas & old scriptures” How true is it?
If it is true why are we lagging behind in development?
Vishnusharma replied:
“Alright. But for a moment let us not go that far behind in Time
but  see what was written in our well known publications
about 50 years ago;for instance the following story in Chandamama.
There was a famous merchant well known for his quality of
goods and low prices, due to which he acquired great riches.
His son had  unexpectedly died suddenly and he was left with one young grandchild.
So the merchant did not want to bother him with business, but
suddenly he fell critically ill. In the dying moments, he called his
grand son and told him
“ I am sorry , I could not train you in business and am now
leaving you  this huge burden. In this short time ,I can only tell
you one golden rule , which is the corner stone of our success.
The rule is “Buy for More and Sell for Less”.So saying the merchant breathed his last,.
The young boy took the advice in all earnestness and practiced it rigorously.
Soon , he found that while he retained the fame , but his riches were
getting eroded fast at a great pace,
He did not know what to do and approached an old friend
of his Grand Father for advice.
The old man heard the problem and smiled. He said
“My  dear boy , your grandfather’s golden rule is perfectly correct.
But the fault lies in your understanding of it.
Do not combine his two sentences. See them separately.
Buy for more means buy quality goods paying a little more
than the others. Then sell for less means, sell them for a little lower price than the others .
Thereby you will get guaranteed good quality supplies from committed people
at all times and an equally committed buyers.
That is, in effect operate on lower margins ,
which will ultimately raise your turn over and    you will end up the better merchant.
That is the story .
So now my dear children, think it over.
We are thinking of bringing in Wall Marts & Costcos &
Ikeas from abroad, who operate successfully on this very same principle;
where as we try to maximize profit on every item. Here our trend is
The bigger the shop;the higher  the price, where as it should be
other way around as you find abroad in these stores .
So now tell me where is the problem? In knowledge or
practice?
As it got dark , the students returned  home pondering over the moral and

their initial doubts in the light of this narration from Vishnusharma
